I was a part of ship's company that opened the base in the Spring of 1966. After one year duty, which included being assigned to Bldg 1 and then to Shore Patrol (under Chief Tuozzo and GM-1 Sawicki), was sent to sea duty. Gulfport and the guys were the greatest and hard workers. If anyone knows Jerry Donnelly, please let me know. I have been in contact with Reid Gilsdorf and he has done very well in life. Again, a great bunch of guys.
Anyone remember the pb & J sandwiches they served every lunch the first few weeks? This was prior to the mess hall's restoration being completed.
I've kept in touch with JO-2 (Journalist) Jerry Marshall and he was one of my best friends. Sadly, he passed away last year. Another great guy that cherished his time in Gulfport. He was a close friend of Commander Martinson throughout life. The Commander passed on about ten years ago in San Diego.

I was stationed with NMCB 133 from May 1982 (when the bomb threat was called into the home base of gulfort on my first night of arrival for those who remember that night)until Dec 1985.

I made MS2 before while in Rota Spain in 1985 and to this day I owe much of what I learned in Baking to MS1 Roy Micks and Cooking to SR. Chief Billy Langdon.

I was honored to have baked and decorated Captain Andrew A. Kannegieser Retirement Cake. He was the first LDO to command a Battalion and the first LDO to make Captain. He was always very nice to me from the first night I met him.

I was baking in the galley one night while in Puerto Rico and this old civilian walked up to me about 0300 and asked me "What does a fella need to do around here to get a Cup of Coffee"? I said to him "well a fella needs to tell me who they are first cause I don't recognize ya" He told me his name was Andy. I gave him a cup o'coffee and a couple of my fresh baked donuts.
